Happy Memorial Day.....All is good here.. the temps are 90+ and I am too hot... and I have no idea what I will do once summer officially arrives. We don't have air conditioning in the house and upstairs is stifling with no breeze.
Tom, the farrier was here today and only did Morgan's feet (and she stood perfectly still for him!). Said that Murphy's were perfect. Got Morgan a new halter-- a pretty girly blue. She looks good in blue. I actually got it on after a couple of tries with Murphy's help (not!).
Tom is a no nonsense person and has been working with "burros" for over 30 yrs. He is one of my experts. My friend who has horses is the other- but she comes at it with a horse perspective and Donkeys and Horses are a little different. What a donkey can and does eat and process might make a horse sick.
So, tonight on Tom's assurance we let the donkeys into a small fenced (a half acre) area of the pasture for about 1.5 hrs to let them eat the grass there. Tom said to just turn them loose into the field of knee high grass-- and we will but this weekend- when we are both home to make sure all goes okay. This week- they can have the little corral. I also want to check with my vet to make sure and see if there are any shots they need for the summer. And Lime disease.. not sure if there is a vaccine for that.
The donks will run with the yearling calves. They have been hanging with them all winter. So, they are old friends by now!
Morgan's New Halter:
I did find out from FB that Donkeys like Animal Crackers- without the frosting. And mine love them!
Also tried Bananas. Lillie will walk over the other two to get to one. I put a piece of banana in Murphys mouth and he gummed it-- and looked like he wanted to spit it out and then opened his mouth for me to take it back! I told him he could just let it drop, but I was not putting my fingers in his mouth to get it.. and he did, then he stepped on it like a bug! Morgan also took a piece and then she gummed hers and let it fall out of her mouth. Now when you try to give her a piece of banana-- she clamps her mouth shut- you can see her grit her teeth and turns her back to me!
Donkeys are funny.
Well-- I have to get back out to the barn to put them to bed. They sleep in their big 3 donkey stall. It is just so hot tonight that I will leave the back door open for a breeze.
Later,
awwwwwwwwwwwwwww, very sweet post post today.
ReplyDeleteGlad all is well with the Donkeys.
We have had a few unusual cool days here so we are so happy. I have air condition home, when you live where a normal summers day hits anywhere from 102 to 110+ you need cool home to retreat to.
I have seen units that you can move around to any room you want maybe that might help. A friend uses hers in the garage when she works there.
cheers, parsnip
Oh yes-- that is something I am pricing right now-- a portable air conditioner. I can get nothing done in this heat! Have had previous room airconditioners in the past.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing with Your Sunday Best this week.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your donkeys -- so very cute. Funny that one likes bananas and the other does not. :)
